Dining in Playa

We found another pleasant restaurant in Playa called “Fogon”. They serve delicious, grilled meat with tacos. However, they specialise in delicious, freshly-squizeed juice.
We chose mango juice and it was mouthwatering.

Whale sharks

Animals in their natural environment are what me and Marcin find fascinating. They can impress, sometimes frighten but every contact with them is a lifetime experience.

Today we had a chance to dive with the whale sharks three times. First, we had to use a speedboat and swim very far from the shore. Fortunately, we had taken some seasickness pills before we embarked on our boat.
Then, we could jump into the water three times with our guide and swim with the huge whale shark.

The first diving was ok. I saw the whale shark but I was late and lost. During the second dive I found myself in front of a huge whale shark’s jaw. That was amazing.

However, the third and the final dive was perfect. I was so close that the shark’s tail touched me. I also stayed in water longer.

All in all, I think that everyone who likes water would enjoy this form of encounter. It is only necessary to find a reliable tour agent or company which specializes in whale shark encounters.

My and Marcin’s pick was Ocean Tours and they did a good job. They are professional and they turned whale shark experience into a profitable and well organized business. They care about SAFETY, COMFORT, seasickness tablets, snacks, drinks, gadgets. They finish the trip with nice lunch in shallow, turquoise water near Isla Mujeres. The sea there is incredible, even better than in Grand Turk Island.

The gap

Being abroad we always experience the gap between us – Poles and other Europeans, North Americans or the Japanese.

For us every penny counts, for them not necessarily.

A good example is a trip to see whale sharks. We paid $280 which is a lot for us. With us there were Germans, French girls and a Dutch.
For them it wasn’t a big deal to buy long-sleeve T-shirts for $25, rent a wetsuit for $15, buy a CD for $30 and finally buy a photo for $8.
I would feel comfortable if the prices were in Polish Zloty, unfortunately, they were not.

Walmart and Mega Mall

Me and Marcin are not wealthy travellers who can dine in restaurants every day and satisfy the whims. Our budget is tight and limited and we always think twice before spending some cash.

While in Playa, we use supermarkets in order to do some shopping connected with food and drinks. We try to prepare supper ourselves and buy some fruits and snacks.

Not so far from Aventura Mexicana, there are two supermarekts which we visit on daily basis, namely: Walmart and Mega.
The prices in both of them are OK and acceptable. It is a good option for shoe string travellers.

Tropical, hot weather and short downpours

We are at the Carribean Sea so the climate is tropical. It is always hot and humid and there are often downpours.
It is really good to have an umbrella as it can protect you against the sun and the rain.
You really need a high factor sunscreen like 20 SPF or more.

When you are on the beach, it is pleasant. You can feel the gentle wind blowing. Far from the beach and you are sweating.

The food

On the first day, we found a “restaurant” specializing in fish and seafood. The tables and chairs were plastic, there was no decor, a simple hole in the wall which was not on the main street. Inside, there were only Mexicans. It was called El Pirato.
However, the food there was great. My pick was a fish fillet, Marcin’s pick were huge, grilled shrimps. We had also a vegetable salad. The cost was 290 pesos. We highly recommend this place.

El Pirato closes early, soon after 8 pm.

We also tasted local pork tacos in another hole in the wall. They were cheap, 10 pesos for one taco but they were not special, simply edible. On Carnival, the American version of taco was more delicious.

Aventura Mexicana

Our hotel is called Aventura Mexicana and it is really lovely. It is almost sunk in plants and flowers, it looks like a magical garden with some hidden rooms.

Our room is clean and simple . You can feel real Mexico here. Unfortunately, we have a problem with a shower. There is no warm water and the the water is dripping not flowing.

We have continental breakfast which is OK. There is very good coffee and tea, juice, water, scrambled eggs, toasts, jam, honey, cake, yoghurt and fruit salad.
Breakast is served from 7am to 11am.

Playa del Carmen

We got off the station on the Fifth Avenue which is the main street in Playa. There are shops, cafes, bars, travel agencies and restaurants. It is not possible to walk through this street without being asked many times about taxi service, trips or a visit to a local shop. All in all, it is a lovely and vibrant place.

Adobus

There are many options to choose from in order to travel from Cancun to Playa. We chose the cheapest one, namely: public transport by ADOBUS.

We were postively shocked by the comfort and service of ADOBUS.
We paid 290 pesos and comfortably enjoyed our sixty-four-minute trip to Playa.
The bus was really comfy and the road was smooth. We highly recommend Adobus.
